Caves tour

Caves tour Algar do Carvão, Gruta do Natal, Furnas do enxofre

The Algar do Carvão classified as a Natural Monument, is located inside the Guilherme Moniz caldera, at a height of 640m, about 12 km away from the city of Angra do Heroísmo. It is a remarkable volcanic cavity whose geological and speleological importance has been rightly pointed out by several national and foreign specialists. After a trachytic eruption originated long before, a new eruption, this time basaltic, tore the preexisting lava flow and began a process that would lead to the formation of a strombolian volcano, consisting of two cones, in its upper part composed of slags, which had a very rich effusive phase, of very fluid lavas. Inside it is possible to observe the domes created by the attempts to exit the lava, as well as some basaltic "covers" that still resist clinging to the primitive rock. Due to the action of water on the interior ceilings of this remarkable empty volcanic chimney, it is possible to observe ferrous and silicious deposits. The presence of silica stalactites is, in particular, the one that most catches the attention of visitors and further raises their curiosity. It is possible to appreciate still other formations originated during the formation of the Algar. In the basal part ends in a small pond, which brings an additional beauty to the cave. The beauty of this Algar also passes through the vegetal communities that cover the interior of the volcanic chimney, being possible to observe different birds that seek refuge. The diverse species of plants, molds, arthropods and other groups are also an important patrimony of this algar. The first descent into the interior dates from 1893. Only in 1966 was the public access tunnel opened.

The Azores are currently one of the largest whale sanctuaries in the world. Among resident and migratory species, common or rare, there are more than 20 different types of cetaceans in their waters. The number impresses and accounts for a third of the total of existing species. We are in an ecosystem of unique characteristics. With the presence of the majestic whales and the friendly dolphins, the blue of the Atlantic becomes even more magical and blessed around these nine islands. Bullfight Tour

Bullfight Tour Come with ProIslandTour experience a bullfight

• Bullfights take place on the street, with the perimeter outlined with white lines on the ground, indicating how far the bull can go.
• The show starts at 6:30 p.m. in the summer, being anticipated as the days get shorter, but the party starts early in the morning with the choice of bulls in the field, where outdoor lunches are held, often accompanied by music and play with little bulls in the `tentaderos` of the cattlemen.
• A few hours before the bullfight, the four chosen bulls are placed in appropriate wooden Boxes, transporting them to the site followed by a caravan decorated with hydrangeas, an abundant plant on the island.
• At 6:30 p.m., the rocket announcing the beginning of the bullfight is launched, at which time the animal leaves the box.
• In order for the bull not to exceed the lines that delimit the festival grounds, the rope, which is between 90 and 100 meters long, is caught by 'shepherds', usually between seven and ten, divided into two groups.
• An important figure is the "capinhas", who "throw a step" at the bull, causing the animal to charge with open umbrellas and sweaters.
• Anyone can risk 'playing' with the bull, just for the sake of it, since there are no paid 'capinhas'.
• The bull cannot be in the street less than 15 minutes, and no more than half an hour, and the retrieval to the box is signaled again by a rocket.
• In the intervals between each bull, the population takes advantage of snacks and food at the canteen trucks.
• In the end, the party continues with the 'eat and drink', sometimes accompanied by music, which the locals call the 'fifth bull'.
