Part of the Serra de Santa Bárbara and Black Mysteries Nature Reserve, this trail starts and ends at the spot where the Gruta do Natal (Christmas Cave) is located, next to Lagoa do Negro (Black Lagoon). Along the trail, it is possible to observe a variety of endemic vegetation such as the juniper (Juniperus brevifolia), the Madeira blueberry (Vaccinium cylindraceum), the laurel (Laurus sp.), the lily-of-the-valley tree (Viburnum tinus), and holly (Ilex perado azorica), among others. Another great attraction are the “Black Mysteries”, which give the trail its name and consist of trachyte domes formed by recent lava accumulations that are not yet fully covered with vegetation. Near the end of the walk, you will find Pico Gaspar on your right, whose ascent allows you to observe its crater rich in endemic species.
